Tiger In New York City Apt.10-05-2003, Antoine Yates said he's not mentally ill; he's just a man who loves animals.“I've loved animals since I was 3 years old,” Yates said Thursday. “It was just a lifetime thing.” That love landed Yates in hot water after "Ming," the 400-pound Siberian tiger he lived with in his Hamilton Heights apartment, bit him. Yates said the tiger attacked him when he tried to prevent it from going after a house cat. “He got me by the neck, he had a full grasp of my neck,” Yates said. “You could feel his teeth but no pressure to bust the skin, but you could feel his breath, but he let me go and he went to hop over me again. That is when he grabbed me one more time. It was more of a painful bite. I got my arm out this time, trying to push him back into the room and he grabbed my leg once. He grabbed my leg it was much more intense and hurting.” Yates said that two and a half years ago, after extensive research, he decided to buy the tiger out of state. He said he took great care of his pet – feeding it and cleaning it; that included brushing its teeth. “You get a little bit of baking soda, you get some toothpaste but you let it dry for a little while just to put the put the taste of that,” he said. “You crush then together with a little bone from a chicken, you rub them all together with light water and you scrape it easy.” In his first local interview Yates told NY1 he wanted to dispel all the rumors about him and his family. He admitted to owning other exotic pets over the years, including monkeys. But he said a tiger, alligator, rabbit, and house cat were all he lived with in his apartment. Yates admitted to owning a lion, but said he never kept it in the apartment. Time 180 min

06/01/2005 A 42-year-old Officer Patrick Caprice, a 14-year veteran of the department now working out of the 73 Precinct has several commendations to his credit. It started tonight with a simple traffic stop. The officer reportedly saw the suspect buying marijuana earlier in the evening. When the officer pulled the suspect's car over, authorities say a hail of gunfire broke out. Ray Kelly, NYC Police Commissioner: "The suspect, still inside his car, fired a .45 caliber pistol at the officers, striking one of them. The wounded officer returned fire, but it was uncertain if the suspect was shot." During the initial burst of gunfire, authorities say police fired at least ten shots, the suspect shot at least four. An army of police officers were brought in and tracked the suspect down. Police searched through the Van Dyck Houses and they say when that suspect heard ESU at the door he shot himself once in the head, taking his own life. At one point during the incident the "L" line subway trains were stopped. They were back in service as of 11:00pm.The officer was hit three times and was in surgery for much of the evening. He underwent a partial bowel resection, but we are told he is lucky to be alive after being shot in the left forearm and torso. Doctors say he should make a full recovery. The officer's bullet-proof vest may have saved his life. Investigators say it appears to have been hit by at least one of the bullets. The officer was said to be in stable condition Wednesday night. 07/06/2005 A police sergeant and his partner were shot Wednesday afternoon inside an East Harlem housing complex, but both are expected to survive their injuries. NYPD officials say 42-year-old Sergeant Patrick O'Boyle and his 32-year-old partner, whose name has not yet been released, were shot inside the Lincoln Houses complex at Park Avenue and 133rd Street shortly before 3:00 this afternoon. According to police, the incident began when the two Housing Bureau officers, who were in plainclothes driving in a car at the time, spotted a man firing two nine-millimeter automatic guns at 135th Street and Fifth Avenue, which is near the housing complex. The officers then chased the man, identified by police as 21-year-old Tyrell Harris, into the complex, where there was an exchange of gunfire. Although it is unclear who fired first, police say Harris fired at least 13 shots at the officers. O'Boyle was shot in the leg, pelvis, and grazed in the head, and his partner suffered a graze wound to his ankle. The officers chased Harris into a building at the housing complex, where officials say he jumped out a relative’s 14th-floor apartment window in an attempt to flee the scene. Harris survived the fall, but he was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital with a fractured skull and other injuries. O'Boyle was taken to Harlem Hospital in good condition. The other injured officer was transported to New York Hospital , also in good condition. Harris was arrested when at the hospital. Investigators say two other suspects have also been arrested in connection with the incident, but it is unclear what their role in the shooting may have been. Time 34 min

07/14/05 Infant Injured In Building Collapse On Upper West Side
A 7-month-old infant is among at least six people injured after the partial collapse of a building at 100th Street and Broadway on the Upper West Side this morning. A Gristede's supermarket was being torn down at the site to make when for a high rise apartment building when it collapsed. Pedestrians passing by were hit with debris. The baby's condition is described as very critical, but St. Luke's Hospital says the baby is expected to live. The mother and baby were walking past the building when it collapsed, with the baby reportedly in a stroller. Three other pedestrians were also injured, including a man who broke both arms and both legs. In addition to the injured baby, three women and two men are injured. Two of the victims were taken to Harlem Hospital. A firefighter reportedly injured his ankle at the site of the collapse. All of the construction workers at the site have been accounted been accounted for and none of them were injured. At least 30 FDNY units responded to the collapse shortly after 9 a.m. Firefighters quickly sifted through the rubble and collapsed scaffolding around the building looking for victims, and at this point, rescue crews believe they have pulled everyone from the rubble. The collapse occurred in a high traffic area, which included a stop for the M104 Downtown bus. The rubble covers about three quarters of the block. The MTA briefly suspended service on the 1, 2, and 3 running through the area on the request of the FDNY, but service was restored at around 11 a.m. Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta, speaking at a press conference following the collapse, said trains will be running at no more than five miles an hour so as not to create vibrations that might cause any further collapse of weakened structures in the area. At this point, Scoppetta said it appears heavy equipment on the roof of the building caused the collapse. Construction crews were working to demolish the building at the site when the collapse occurred. Extel Development Corporation, part of the Carlisle Group, is planning to building a 31-story apartment building on the west side of Broadway and a 37-story building on the east side. As recently as last night, neighborhood advocates protested the construction plans, saying the skyscrapers were not in keeping with the character of the neighborhood. The tallest building on the block is 20 stories. City officials say all of the construction paperwork was in order, but they have issued a stop work order in the meantime. Time 26 min
